Ontario Investing to Protect More Firefighters

May 11, 2026

Funding will help fire services in Woolwich Township expand cancer prevention initiatives, improve safety for lithium-ion battery related emergencies and upgrade infrastructure

ElmiraAs part of its plan to protect Ontario and keep communities safe, the Ontario government is protecting firefighters in Woolwich Township by investing $102,613.60 through the Fire Protection Grant. The funding from this grant is helping municipal fire departments expand cancer prevention initiatives, improve emergency response to lithium-ion battery related incidents, and upgrade key infrastructure.

“Woolwich firefighters put their lives on the line to keep our community safe, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they have the equipment and facilities they need to do that job effectively,” said MPP Mike Harris, Kitchener-Conestoga. “This grant is helping Woolwich upgrade their firehall and equip firefighters with the gear they need to stay protected and keep serving our community.”

This funding will support Woolwich Fire Department by:

  • Renovating the firehall with shower installation.
  • Purchase 2 bunker gear extractors and 1 gear dryer.
  • Purchase  additional PPE – 18 sets of bunker gear, 170 particulate hoods, and 170 pairs of firefighting gloves.

“Firefighters are always there when we need them, running towards danger to protect our homes and our communities,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “That is why we’re doubling this year’s Fire Protection Grant, giving even more firefighters across the province the tools they need to stay safe and effectively respond to life threatening emergencies.”

This year’s Fire Protection Grant will support all 380 municipal fire services in Ontario, helping the approximately 33,000 firefighters who protect Ontario and keep our communities safe.
